Past Research

  • Conceptualizing Systemic Social Oppression as Collective Trauma

This project conceptualized systemic social oppression as a form of collective trauma and examined its role in perpetuating health and social disparities within historically marginalized populations, particularly Black communities.

  • Telehealth ‘VERZUZ’ Radical Telehealing

This research analyzes how participants of two Instagram Live engagements, designed for Black audiences (DJ D-Nice's Club Quarantine" & the VERZUZ music battles) discussed their experiences. This research reveals that Black people leveraged social media applications, like Instagram, to create informal forms of culturally congruent care that were widely regarded as accessible, timely, and necessary for attuning to one’s emotional and spiritual needs, particularly in the context of ongoing, systemic stressors

Current Research Projects

  • "Reimagining Social Media"

This project examines Black women’s conceptualizations of culturally congruent care, identifying practices and settings they use to engage with this care, with a particular emphasis on social media applications.

  • "Reimagining Virtual Reality"

This project investigates how the technological features of virtual reality can be optimally leveraged to enhance the characteristics of culturally congruent care for Black women.

Looking Ahead

  • "Speculative Healing"

This project aims to use speculative design methodologies to envision and conceptualize social media applications that Black women might develop to facilitate and support culturally congruent care practices.
